Location chats cover the whole site. When you need a smaller room, a group chat or a direct message gets you one.
What you'll need
- Available on the Bundle plan, or on a Custom plan that includes Chat.
- Anyone can create either kind. There's no role restriction, so a Team Member can start a group just as an Admin can.
Start a group chat
Say the new dryer is being installed on Thursday and four people need to coordinate.
To create a group chat:
- Select the speech-bubble icon in the header.
- Select the add control at the top of the left panel, then Group Chats.
- Give the group a name, such as Dryer Install.
- Find people with Search people... and select each one under Add people.
- Create the group.
A group needs a name. Leave it blank and you'll see Please enter a group name.
Start a direct message
To message one person:
- Select the speech-bubble icon in the header.
- Select the add control, then Direct Messages.
- Find the person with Search people...
- Choose them under Select a person to message.
The conversation opens and appears under Direct Messages in the left panel.
Who you can reach
Group chats and direct messages aren't tied to a location, so the people picker covers your whole company. You can message someone who works at a different site.
Good to know- A group chat's creator can add and remove members, but can't remove themselves. Hand the group to someone else first if you're leaving the company.
- Star a conversation to keep it at the top of the left panel under Starred.
- There's no way to convert a direct message into a group. Start a group chat and add both people.
Common questions
Who can do this?
Anyone. Starting a group chat or a direct message isn't limited by role.
Can I change it later?
Yes for a group: the name and its members can be changed at any time. A direct message is fixed at two people.
Does this affect my other locations?
No. Group chats and direct messages aren't tied to a location, so you can reach anyone at your company.
