Rename a group, add or remove people, leave a chat you're done with, or delete one entirely. What you can do depends on whether you started it.
Most of what you can do to a chat depends on one thing: whether you started it. The person who created a group chat renames and deletes it. Everyone else can add people and leave.
What you'll need
- Available on the Bundle plan, or on a Custom plan that includes Chat.
- These controls are the same for every role. Nothing here is admin-only.
Rename a group chat
To rename a group:
- Open the group.
- Select Chat settings at the top of the conversation.
- Select Edit Group Name.
- Type the new name and select Confirm.
Only the person who created the group sees this option.
Add or remove people
To change who's in a group:
- Open the group and select View members.
- Select Add people, find someone with Search people..., and select Add user.
- To take someone out, remove them from the same member list.
Anyone in the group can add people, up to 100 at a time. Removing someone is limited to the person who created the group, and they can't remove themselves.
Leave a group chat
Select Chat settings, then Leave Channel. You stop receiving its messages and it drops off your list.
The creator doesn't get this option. If you started the group and want out, delete it or hand it over by adding someone else and asking them to start a fresh group.
Delete a group chat or a direct message
Only the person who started it can delete it. Select Chat settings, then Delete Group Chat or Delete Conversation.
The confirmation is blunt, and accurate: every message is permanently deleted, all participants lose access to the chat history, and it cannot be reversed.
Location chats work differently
A location chat has none of these controls. Its membership follows who's assigned to the location, and it can't be renamed, left, or deleted from inside Chat. See What are location chats?
- Leaving a group is not the same as deleting it. The conversation carries on without you.
- Adding someone to an existing group gives them the messages sent before they arrived.
- A direct message can't be renamed or added to. Start a group chat if you need a third person.
Common questions
Can I undo deleting a chat?
No. Every message goes with it, for everyone. Save anything you need first.
Who can do this?
Anyone can add people and leave. Renaming, removing people, and deleting are limited to whoever created the chat.
Will people know I removed them?
They aren't told, but the conversation disappears from their list. Say something first if it matters.
