Set up shift types and breaks

Set up shift types and breaks

Set your opening, closing, and mid shifts once so times fill themselves in, then add lunch breaks inside a shift.

September 28, 2026

Set it once. A shift type carries a name and a time range, so picking it on a shift fills the start and end times for you.

What you'll need

  • Available on the Bundle plan, or on a Custom plan that includes Employee Scheduler.
  • Admins and Super Admins can edit shift types, and each location keeps its own list.

Set up your shift types

To edit shift types:

  1. Select Schedule in the side menu, then Create Schedule.
  2. Select Actions, then Edit Shift Types.
  3. Select Add Shift Type.
  4. Enter a Shift Name, like mid for the tunnel's busy stretch, then set Start Time and End Time.
  5. Select Save Changes.

The new type shows up in the Shift Type list next time you add a shift. A type named opening is green on the grid and closing is orange—everything else is blue. Names have to be unique at the location, and the end time later than the start.

Add a break inside a shift

To add a break:

  1. Add a shift, or select an existing one to edit it.
  2. Tick Schedule Break?.
  3. Select Add Break, then name it and set its start and end times.
  4. Tick Subtract break hours from weekly totals if the break is unpaid.
  5. Save the shift.

Ticking that box takes the break out of the weekly total. Leave it clear and the break time still counts.

Good to know
  • Every location starts with an opening and a closing type, both 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM until you change them. New types start at the same times.
  • A break has to sit inside the shift's own hours, or you get Break must be within shift hours with the shift's times in the message.
  • Deleting a shift type doesn't touch shifts already built on it. Old weeks still read right, you just can't pick that type for new shifts.

Common questions

Can I change it later?

Yes. Names, hours, and breaks can all be edited. Changing a type doesn't move shifts already built from it.

Does this affect my other locations?

No. A shift type belongs to one location, so each site can run its own names and hours.

Who can do this?

Only Admins and Super Admins. The shift type controls aren't shown to Team Members at all.
